Schwarzbier is a German dark lager with a black colour and hints of coffee or chocolate flavours. It’s a very popular style of beer – especially in southeastern Germany where it has its roots, which can be traced back as far as the Middle Ages. There are many unique variations of Schwarzbier, however it’s generally a medium-bodied and dark beer with malt accents and a creamy, long-lasting head.
According to the German Beer Institute, Schwarzbier is to lager what stout or porter is to ale, but “unlike a British ale, it has a clean lager taste that leaves next to no perception of fruitiness on the palate.” Schwarzbier does however share similarities with stout in that they both get a dark colour from the roasted malt.
